Marketing Washington wheat
Interview with Tom Mick, CEO Washington Wheat Commission
What will it take to get Portland grain buyers to pay $5 for a bushel of soft white wheat?
"Adverse weather in our competitor countries. That's the fastest way, along with a reduced crop here."
Which countries are going to buy most of the 2003 Washington wheat harvest?
"Our major markets are the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Yemen. Those are the big five we watch. Then there are swing market countries such as Egypt and Indonesia."
When will we see genetically modified wheat planted in the Pacific Northwest?
"Unfortunately, before the market is ready for it. There was talk of releasing spring varieties within the next three years, but that's the red spring wheats, not soft whites (the dominant variety grown in Eastern Washington). Soft white wheat will probably be the last."
If someone wants a food made from Washington wheat, what should they buy at the local grocer?
"Confectionery items: Cookies, crackers, cakes and pies where soft flour is needed."
